1. Leave the spacer alone. Remove the airscrew cover and turn out a couple turns, no more major backfiring, at least from my 98.

1b. Backfire will be worse with new Jardine unit until you adjust the airscrew. Bike is very lean to begin with, better muffler makes it more so. See above. I run an open system on my bike, I think megaphone type mufflers are beyond hideously ugly.

2. It may help, but not all Savages like synthetic oil. Mine will lose the full measure in under an hour during the summer. I've run regular Castrol 20W50 since the first oil change, with no motor damage and no shifting problems. Tighten your clutch cable, mine is very stretchy, so I run it tighter than advised. With the clutch release arm moving as soon as the lever does, I have no problems with the clutch anymore.
